Chapter 8

Overview

Elend compels Vetitan’s people to face the mists for immunity, accepting deaths as the cost of survival while Vin struggles with guilt. Traveling north, Vin questions a koloss named Human, hinting at mysteries of their origins. At a canal encampment, Demoux links up; Elend orders refugee escort, supply retrieval from the Vetitan cache, confirms the last cache is in Fadrex, and calls a council to plan wider conquest.

Summary

As the caravan leaves Vetitan, day mists roll in and randomly strike villagers with seizures; some die, most recover, and the survivors gain immunity. Elend, believing permanent mists will soon force everyone outside, had required exposure despite the risks. Vin, horrified, feels complicit in the deaths even as Elend Soothes grief without erasing it.

The next day, Vin walks apart with a single koloss under her control. She questions the creature, which calls itself Human, revealing unsettling hostility and ambition to “be human.” Vin probes koloss growth and reproduction; Human implies new koloss come “from us,” offering no clear explanation but hinting at deeper mysteries.

Approaching a major canal, Vin scouts ahead and finds Demoux’s entrenched army camp of some fifty thousand using barges for supply. Elend reunites with General Demoux, confirms the Vetitan storage cavern’s discovery, and praises the dredging project that reopens a southern bend for barge traffic.

Elend orders two detachments: one to escort Fatren and the refugees north to Luthadel and another to retrieve supplies from the Vetitan cache by barge. He refuses to conscript Fatren’s trained men, inviting only volunteers to ensure battlefield reliability.

Finally, Elend confirms the location of the last storage cache in Fadrex—Cett’s former city—and instructs Demoux to assemble a meeting that evening. Tired but resolute, he frames the agenda as “conquering the world,” signaling an escalation of plans as mists worsen and resources grow scarce.
