Overview
Sazed regains his faith while studying kandra lore, then learns of the secret kandra Resolution: a commanded self-slaughter by removing Blessings. The sudden disappearance of the mists alarms the First Generation, who suspect Preservation’s power has been taken up. Before action is decided, KanPaar leads a coup, gagging the Firsts and Sazed and seizing the Trustwarren—and the atium.
Summary
Sazed reviews his metal notes in the kandra Homeland and reflects on Terris religion. Studying believers’ words rather than doctrines, he realizes faith is a choice rooted in trust and personal signs. Remembering TenSoon’s timely arrival, Sazed consciously chooses to believe again.
He goes to the Trustwarren, where unusual anxiety grips the kandra: the night mists have vanished. Haddek of the First Generation declares the event significant and clears the hall to consult privately with Sazed.
The Firsts reveal a hidden charge from the Lord Ruler: the Resolution, a command for all kandra to remove their Blessings—returning to mistwraiths—if ordered. They worry the vanished mists, the body of Preservation, signal that time. Sazed proposes another possibility: someone has taken up Preservation’s power. He grows hopeful that this aligns with the Hero of Ages.
Before they can act, KanPaar and the Seconds arrive with Fifth Generation enforcers and stage a coup. Claiming to prevent panic and preserve stability, KanPaar binds and gags the Firsts and Sazed. Sazed is dragged away as the Seconds seize control of the Trustwarren—and with it, the atium—leaving the kandra’s fate in the hands of usurpers.
