Chapter 82
Overview
Sazed finds Vin and Elend dead, then realizes Vin and Ruin’s remnants offer twin, opposing powers. Using his copperminds’ accumulated knowledge, Sazed takes both powers without letting them annihilate each other, restores the planet and life to their pre-Ascension state, and safeguards humanity’s refuges.
He learns the Hero must unite Preservation and Ruin, accepts an endless stewardship, and becomes God—the Hero of Ages spanning the eras.
Summary
Sazed waits at the cavern mouth amid deadly heat and confused koloss while wounded Demoux lingers nearby. He sees Elend’s corpse and, moments later, the fallen bodies of Vin and an unknown red-haired man appear among the koloss dead. Despairing, Sazed confirms Vin is dead as the sun’s heat grows unbearable.
Sazed notices mist and smoke leaking from Vin and the red-haired corpse—remnants of Preservation and Ruin. Realizing the prophecies’ gender-neutral phrasing and the line about bearing the world’s future “on his arms,” he recognizes the Hero must unite both powers. Fearing to repeat the Lord Ruler’s mistakes, he hesitates—until he recalls his copperminds.
Sazed plunges his arms into the twin powers, lets his body dissolve, and empties all Keeper knowledge into his expanded awareness. Holding Preservation and Ruin in deliberate balance, he uses religious records and maps to restore continents, oceans, tectonics, and the world’s orbit with precision rather than force.
Drawing on diverse faiths’ preserved truths—star charts, anatomy, nature, color, and memories of beauty—Sazed repairs human physiology, revives plants and animals, returns true skies and colors, and even restores flowers. He protects humanity’s caverns as he reshapes the world.
Recognizing that Rashek and Vin only sampled fractions of these infinite powers, Sazed understands the two forces belong together. With both original gods gone, he accepts lasting guardianship. The Hero of Ages is not a once-per-age savior, but a steward across ages. Sazed becomes God.
