Chapter 32

Elend mingles at Yomen’s ball and unexpectedly reunites with Telden, an old friend who questions Elend’s transformation from idealist to emperor. Elend asserts that people need stability but hopes to become more figurehead than autocrat. Determined, he approaches Yomen to seek alliance rather than conquest.

Elend and Yomen debate rule, legitimacy, and philosophy. Yomen brands Elend a hypocrite for reclaiming Luthadel by force and insists only a man chosen by the Lord Ruler holds true authority. When Elend presses about Fadrex’s storage cavern, Yomen’s brief surprise—along with the atium bead on his brow—confirms knowledge he refuses to admit. Yomen rejects alliance, preferring resistance to rule by the slayer of his god, forcing Elend to accept a siege.

Meanwhile, Vin becomes the women’s instant focus and realizes she belongs at court as much as in the streets. Elend “rescues” her and leads her to the floor, joking with a book to echo their first meeting before putting it away. Vin encourages Elend to reconcile his scholar’s heart with his emperor’s duty, urging him not to let rulership erase his true self.

They perform a breathtaking Allomancer-graceful dance, openly embracing their identities. Afterward, they plan to exploit an upcoming ball at the Canton of Resource to access the presumed cache beneath it. Elend publicly offers safe passage for any wishing to leave Fadrex, then he and Vin make a dramatic Coinshot exit.
