Chapter 59
Overview
TenSoon reaches a fire-scarred but functioning Urteau and discovers the canals restored and morale unexpectedly high. He reveals himself to Breeze and meets Sazed, who places Breeze in charge while showing a loss of religious zeal. Learning Vin and Elend are in Fadrex seeking another storage cavern, TenSoon prepares for the long journey.
Summary
TenSoon enters a devastated Urteau, noting a third of the city burned yet the canals inexplicably refilled and passable. The populace seems proud for having saved much of the city, and Elend’s soldiers guard a Ministry building that now runs civic operations.
Needing answers, TenSoon forgoes using Kelsier’s bones and instead strides into the building as a talking wolfhound, startling the guards. Inside, he finds Breeze presiding over petitions. Breeze quickly discerns TenSoon is a kandra, not Vin’s former hound, and escorts him to Sazed.
Sazed summarizes recent events: Spook barely survived the fires, and Breeze assumed daily governance in a repurposed Ministry office. TenSoon asks after Vin and learns she and Emperor Elend have gone to Fadrex to search for another storage cavern, forcing TenSoon to face a long journey to reach them.
Weighing what to reveal, TenSoon decides to mention the Hero of Ages and the world’s end. Sazed, unexpectedly detached from religious inquiry, offers provisions without engaging the topic, revealing his crisis of faith. Surprised, TenSoon resolves to depart immediately for Fadrex.
