An epigraph explains that Preservation ceded a fragment of his own power to grant humans sentience, making him slightly weaker than Ruin. Over ages, this imbalance enabled Ruin to gain advantage. They forged a pact—Preservation gained thinking life, while Ruin was promised eventual destruction—yet Preservation ultimately broke the agreement.

Vin awakens in a sparse room, manacled with a silver chain and purged of all metals after being drugged in the caverns. She tests for reserves and finds none, experiencing a sharp sense of loss at her inability to burn metals. Yomen watches the sunset, noting the danger even a flake of steel would pose, and explains the precautions: rainwater stored in wood and silver restraints.

Yomen returns Vin’s bronze-and-silver earring, observing its curious, tactically unhelpful composition. Vin replaces it, feeling comfort rather than plotting an attack. Yomen remains calm, wearing a visible atium bead, and appears ready for any move she might make.

To forestall an assault by Elend, Yomen brings in an unarmed messenger from Elend’s camp. Under strict speech limits, Vin answers a random verification question about a meal, convincing the messenger she is genuine. After the messenger departs, Vin warns that Elend will not be placated for long.

Yomen then discloses his true purpose: not leverage, but execution. He deems himself the law in Fadrex and accuses Vin of murder—the Lord Ruler’s. He orders guards to kill her at any sign of ingesting metal, while Ruin whispers to Vin to kill her captors. Vin resists the prompting, gauges Yomen’s unseen strategy, and is led away as he maintains enigmatic control.
