Chapter 46

Overview

An epigraph explains Ruin’s freedom: the Well’s released Preservation power unlocked his prison. In Urteau, Spook confronts Beldre but refuses to kill Quellion, then returns with a plan to expose Quellion’s hypocrisy and restore water. Sazed, mired in doubt, agrees to draw on his metalminds to help as quakes worsen.

Summary

The chapter opens with an explanation of Ruin’s escape: the Well of Ascension held Preservation’s power, which formed Ruin’s prison. When Vin released that power rather than using it, the dispersed Preservation energy acted as a key and unlocked Ruin’s confinement.

In Urteau, Breeze, Allrianne, Sazed, and Captain Goradel wait anxiously in their cavern lair for Spook’s return. They debate Spook’s dramatic rescue and apparent abilities, while Sazed—faithless and unsettled—rejects turning to his copperminds for answers. He tries to study a religion of Trell but cannot focus, worrying about Spook and sensing larger events in motion.

Outside the Citizen’s home, Spook meets Beldre in the ashen remains of a garden. He reveals he knows Quellion is a Coinshot and that Quellion secretly uses Allomancers by coercing them through threats to their families. Spook appeals to Beldre’s guilt and asks her to leave with him, but she screams for guards. Urged by Kelsier’s insistent inner voice to kill Quellion, Spook refuses and flees, leaving Quellion alive.

Back in the cavern, Sazed polishes his metalminds and confides in Breeze his disillusionment with the Keepers’ work and his reluctance to wear the metalminds while he doubts their value. An earthquake shakes the lair, reinforcing the increasing frequency of quakes. Goradel announces Spook’s return.

Spook arrives burned and bloodstained but uninjured, immediately directing action. He confirms Quellion’s hypocrisy—denouncing Allomancy while secretly employing Mistings—and tasks Breeze with spreading the truth. He asks Sazed if the diverted canals can be restored to flood the streets, creating a miracle to rally the people behind a new leader. Pressed to consult his stored knowledge, Sazed wrestles with his principles but, moved by Spook’s resolve and the immediate need, agrees to use his metalminds to attempt the engineering feat.
