Chapter 67

From the battlements of Fadrex, Vin and Elend watch koloss continue to swell outside the city in the ashstorm. Yomen, tense and skeptical, questions why the koloss do not attack. Vin concludes Ruin is waiting to learn the atium’s location.

Vin wrestles with how often she has unknowingly served Ruin’s designs, recalling the brief moment she frightened Ruin through Marsh when the mists empowered her. Despite repeated attempts, she cannot summon that power on demand, and her frustration mounts.

A catastrophic earthquake tears across the land, toppling rock shelves and buildings. Vin saves Yomen from falling, and Elend notes the quake is the worst yet. He insists they can retreat to the caverns, which he believes the Lord Ruler selected to withstand such shocks, though Yomen remains grim.

Seeing Elend newly balanced—idealism tempered by hard-won resolve—Vin decides to turn Ruin’s strategy back on him. She forms a plan to place herself in grave danger to force Ruin’s Inquisitors to act, hoping desperation will draw the mists to her again and reveal Ruin’s hidden traps.

Without stating the true plan aloud, Vin implies to Elend that she must retrieve the atium. Elend, trusting her, agrees it could be safer and strategically valuable in Fadrex. After a final embrace, Vin gathers metal and launches toward Luthadel, inviting Ruin into a chase and setting the stage for a decisive confrontation.
