Vin senses Ruin’s presence and tests assumptions about its abilities. Remembering the Lord Ruler’s statement that Ruin cannot read minds, she distinguishes Ruin’s manipulations from her own memories, concluding it influences emotions and perceptions at a distance but now can manifest more directly.
