Chapter 34

Overview

Marsh, suppressing a sliver of independence to fool Ruin, travels through Elend’s neglected territory and murders a noble Smoker to create a hemalurgic spike. His act enables Ruin’s designs while wasting some power. Immediately after, Mount Tyrian violently erupts toward the nearby starving town, underscoring Ruin’s accelerating devastation.

Summary

Marsh enters a decaying town in Elend Venture’s territory beneath Mount Tyrian. He deliberately keeps a tiny part of himself dormant to convince Ruin he has surrendered, even as he waits for a chance to resist. The townspeople, already starving, cower at the sight of an Inquisitor.

Marsh targets a slightly better-kept mansion, kills the gate guard and a maid without hesitation, and methodically searches the house. He finds a balding nobleman—a Smoker—passed out from drink. Though Marsh would rather witness fear, Ruin compels efficiency; Marsh drives a bronze spike through the man’s heart, harvesting his Allomantic copper ability for later use.

Marsh reflects that Hemalurgy works best when a spike is transferred directly from victim to host, lamenting the loss of potency in transporting it. He leaves the bodies where they fell and exits. Outside, desperate skaa beg for the return of obligators and the Lord Ruler’s stability; Marsh dismisses them, knowing worse is imminent.

At a remove from town, Marsh turns to watch as Mount Tyrian explodes. Ash, rock, and magma pour down the slope toward the plains. The eruption renders hunger irrelevant, dramatizing Ruin’s escalating annihilation while Marsh, still biding his time, observes the world’s swiftening collapse.
