Overview
Elend tours the vast refugee camp, learns food is failing, and hears reports of Kelsier’s guidance as koloss approach. Sazed awakens among mistwraiths, discovers many kandra obeyed the Resolution, and blocks KanPaar’s attempt to seize the atium. Drawn by a guiding voice, Elend finds the kandra Homeland, helps subdue the kandra loyalists, locates the atium cache, and repurposes the caverns to shelter refugees, shifting the focus to immediate survival.

At the refugee camp near the Pits, Elend—touring with Demoux—notes Terris organization but dwindling food. Demoux reports Luthadel’s collapse under Penrod’s paranoia and claims that Kelsier appeared, warning people to flee. Elend orders Demoux’s men to test Allomantic metals, suspecting they have become Allomancers.
In the kandra Homeland, Sazed awakens among mistwraiths, realizing most kandra obeyed the Resolution and removed their Blessings. He spots KanPaar directing loyalists to access the Trustwarren and the atium. Recovering his metalminds, Sazed uses steel, pewter, and iron to slam and hold the doors shut, buying time while his stores rapidly deplete, and prays for help.
Hearing a guiding voice like Vin’s, Elend leaves camp with Demoux, follows tracks to a hidden tunnel, and discovers vast caverns filled with smaller mistwraiths. He reaches the Trustwarren as Sazed falters; the doors burst open and kandra rush out. Trusting the man is Sazed, Elend and Demoux’s soldiers subdue the kandra quickly, breaking bones to prevent healing and escape.
Sazed identifies the place as the kandra Homeland and the site of the Lord Ruler’s hidden atium. Elend deems the metal worthless for the starving refugees but recognizes the caverns’ value as shelter. With koloss advancing, he orders preparations to move the people underground, focusing all efforts on immediate survival.
