Chapter 7

Overview

After a year imprisoned, TenSoon is given human bones and rebuilds a makeshift body, regaining sight and sensation. Escorted by Fifth Generation kandra led by VarSell, he is taken through the Homeland toward the Trustwarren. TenSoon reflects on kandra culture, the Contract, and his betrayal. He prepares to defend himself before the First Generation, setting up a pivotal judgment for the kandra.

Summary

The chapter opens with a reflection on the united effort against Ruin. In the Homeland, TenSoon receives a set of human bones and painstakingly forms muscles, skin, and organs, rediscovering the sensations of sight, breath, and solidity after a year in a stone pit. His body is generic but functional, enough to let him stand and face his captors.

VarSell, a Fifth Generation kandra with a quartz True Body, supervises, mistakenly assuming TenSoon had previously digested the human whose bones were used. TenSoon corrects him and notes the Seconds’ inexperience, earning VarSell’s irritation. Guarded by other Fifths bearing the Blessing of Potency, TenSoon is denied clothing and alters his form to kandra norms as they lead him through back corridors, avoiding attention.

As they proceed, TenSoon contemplates kandra society: younger generations’ True Bodies, mistwraith origins, the irony of shaping themselves after humans despite resenting human Contracts, and the likely end of future Generations with the death of the Father. He recognizes his alienation and the weight of his “betrayal,” yet resolves that it was for the good of his people.

Realizing their destination is the sacred Trustwarren, TenSoon understands he will finally face the First Generation. He has spent a year planning his defense; should he fail, he expects eternal consequence. The escort continues toward judgment, framing an imminent turning point for the kandra.
