Chapter 41
Overview
An epigraph clarifies Hemalurgy’s physical transformations: spikes warp humans like koloss and Inquisitors but grant kandra sentience. In Urteau, Spook exposes Quellion’s hypocrisy by rescuing prisoners from a burning execution and publicly manifests as a new “Survivor.” Breeze and Allrianne orchestrate a riot to cover his escape, while Sazed reconsiders faith’s resurgence.
Summary
The epigraph explains Hemalurgy’s bodily impacts: spikes physically alter recipients based on type, placement, and number. Inquisitors and koloss are drastically remade, while kandra—born from mistwraiths—gain cognition and a measure of humanity from their spikes.
In Urteau’s market, Sazed, Breeze, and Allrianne await the Citizen’s executions. Sazed analyzes the growing Survivor religion, speculating it can reinvent itself through successive “Survivors.” Breeze remains pragmatic, and Allrianne chafes at inaction as Quellion arrives in blue, prepared to burn prisoners that include those with noble ties and dissenters.
Spook, guided by the voice of Kelsier, infiltrates a hidden escape passage used by Quellion’s soldiers to secretly extract valuable Allomancers from the execution buildings. Fueled by pewter and tin, Spook kills multiple guards, frees the captives through the bolt-hole, and corners the last soldier holding a girl hostage. He cripples the man, then, with the tunnel barred and the fire encroaching, carries the child through the burning structure and bursts out an attic window.
Spook lands before the crowd, cloaked in smoke and carrying the rescued child, implicitly challenging Quellion. Breeze and Allrianne then Riot the crowd’s anger and Sooth away fear, triggering a surge that forces Quellion to retreat while Spook escapes down an alley. Afterward, Breeze reins in the mob to prevent slaughter. Sazed recognizes Spook and, moved by events, notes how the Survivor faith is transforming around this new symbol.
