In the kandra Homeland, Sazed oversees the dramatic return of the First Generation, who denounce KanPaar and summon the people. Amid the gathering, TenSoon—appearing as a Fifth—suddenly attacks Sazed, warning that an outside force compels him to kill. As Sazed struggles for breath, Haddek recognizes Ruin’s influence and proclaims, “The Resolution has come.”

TenSoon battles the compulsion, briefly loosening his grip while reaching toward his spikes, but the struggle overwhelms Sazed, who blacks out as the kandra face their dire, long-prepared contingency.
