Overview
The epigraph claims Ruin fabricated Kelsier’s “Eleventh Metal” lore to engineer the Lord Ruler’s fall. In the Homeland, TenSoon wrestles with accepting punishment versus warning Vin. The Seconds plan a brutal, public penalty, but ordering TenSoon to don his old dog bones inadvertently hands him the means to escape.
Summary
The chapter opens with an assertion that Ruin manipulated Kelsier’s “Eleventh Metal” legends, guiding events so the Lord Ruler would be killed—an outcome necessary for Ruin’s plans, since the Lord Ruler would never have released him.
In the kandra Homeland, TenSoon broods in his cage, MeLaan’s earlier rebuke pricking his conscience. He weighs the honor of accepting eternal imprisonment for breaking Contract against the duty to warn Vin about kandra origins, the Trust, and the ominous earthquakes he feels through the stone.
TenSoon analyzes escape and finds it impossible: he is confined in a mesh cage, guarded by Fifth Generation kandra with the Blessing of Potency, and he lacks mass and strength to fight or flee. Accepting punishment seems the only orderly, culturally proper path—yet it would abandon MeLaan and the younger generations to the Seconds’ inaction.
Fifth Generation kandra led by VarSell arrive early, bringing a sack. The Seconds have ordered TenSoon to wear the contents to his trial because his current bones will be broken in a public, exemplary punishment intended to cow the younger generations. The prospect promises intense, inescapable pain.
The sack contains TenSoon’s old wolfhound bones—the animal body he once used. TenSoon had previously derided those bones aloud, hoping the Seconds’ spies would report it, knowing their traditionalism would choose this humiliation. The ploy works. As VarSell departs, TenSoon realizes that being forced into the dog body grants him mobility and capabilities that may let him escape despite the cage and guards.
