Chapter 71

An epigraph explains that sixteen was Preservation’s immutable sign, a proof that something unnatural was happening and that aid existed—hinting at deeper universal laws.

In the kandra Homeland, Sazed compares Terris texts, noting Ruin’s subtle edits nudging belief that Vin is the Hero. The First Generation confirm gender-neutral prophecies and recount Ruin and Preservation as complementary cosmic forces. Preservation bargained for help creating sentient life, with the price that Ruin could one day destroy the world; Preservation later sacrificed himself to imprison Ruin.

Probing the nature of the Well, Sazed learns “gods” are disembodied powers: Preservation’s mind is gone but power remained pooled, while Ruin’s power coalesced as black mists. They assert parity between the Shards, though Preservation gave a little more of himself to humanity. Sazed wrestles with faith versus logic but continues his inquiry.

The elders warn that if Ruin is free, he will seek his body—his power—and reveal the kandra’s First Contract: gather and hide it. Sazed opens a concealed stone dais using pewter Feruchemy and uncovers an enormous cache of atium. The elders explain the ruse: obligators secretly extracted atium in metal rooms; empty geodes went to Luthadel; payments and “taxes” reclaimed beads so most atium flowed to this vault.

Sazed realizes atium is unlike other metals—condensed divine power enabling future sight—and thus exactly what Ruin seeks. Separately, TenSoon, traveling in a horse’s body toward Fadrex, encounters Tyrian’s cataclysmic eruption, lava flows, and a scorched landscape, and despairs that he may be too late.
