Chapter 11: Haven

Overview

Kvothe visits Auri, trading gifts and receiving her promise of refuge, revealing their deep bond. Elodin appears, and after Kvothe’s plea, swears to protect Auri and secures Kvothe’s return to the Archives by confronting Lorren. Kvothe pays tuition and enrolls, including Elodin’s naming class.

Summary

Kvothe returns to the University buoyed by his new loan and brings gifts to Auri atop Mains: bee mead, barley bread, and a smoked salmon. Auri reciprocates with a lavender candle she made, a kiss on his forehead, and an open invitation to safety in the Underthing. Their exchange underscores Auri’s affection and Kvothe’s protective concern for her well-being.

Master Elodin arrives unexpectedly. Auri, cautious but trusting, accepts his cinnas fruit and allows him to share their meal, revealing that Elodin already knows of her. Kvothe, afraid Auri could be taken to the asylum Haven, begs Elodin to keep her secret. Elodin notices Kvothe’s fear, steadies him, and later hears Kvothe’s direct plea for a promise.

After dinner, they discuss Auri’s name—given by Kvothe—and Elodin observes Kvothe with unusually clear focus. When pressed, Elodin swears by name, power, and moon to neither expose Auri nor send her to Haven. He then invites Kvothe to a forthcoming naming class and recommends Teccam’s Underlying Principles.

Learning Kvothe is still banned from the Archives, Elodin leads him to Master Lorren’s window atop the Masters’ Hall. Elodin vouches for Kvothe and secures his reinstatement after tense bargaining, jokingly staking Kvothe’s thumbs as collateral for future misbehavior. Kvothe is alarmed but accepts the outcome.

The next day, Kvothe pays his nine talents and five jots tuition with the bursar, then registers for Medica observation, Physiognomy, Physic, Ferrous and Cupric Metallurgy, Adept Sympathy, and Elodin’s provocatively titled “Introduction to Not Being a Stupid Jackass.”
