Chapter 126: The First Stone
Overview
Kvothe masters and publicly recites Saicere’s Atas, then undergoes his stone trial. Facing a furious Carceret at the first stone, he lands two strikes but is swiftly knocked down and yields to avoid crippling injury.
The failed advance underscores his limits among the Adem and heightens tensions tied to Larel’s legacy.
Summary
Kvothe spends three days with Magwyn, laboriously memorizing the full Atas, the lineage and history of Saicere. He successfully recites it to Magwyn, resisting the urge to sing it, and is sent to Shehyn with a sealed note confirming his readiness.
Shehyn notes Kvothe’s bandages are off and, with Vashet away, insists his stone trial proceed immediately. Kvothe, uneasy and uninformed about the trial’s details, learns he must publicly recite the Atas, then climb the hill and fight successively ranked opponents.
At the stone hill, a large Adem crowd gathers. Tempi urgently warns Kvothe that his first opponent is Carceret, Larel’s daughter, enraged by Kvothe’s admittance and his bearing of Larel’s sword. Tempi cautions that Carceret intends to cripple him and advises quick submission if caught.
Kvothe delivers the Atas aloud before the silent audience. At the first stone, Carceret discards her training sword; Kvothe mirrors her. They fight unarmed. Kvothe briefly escapes a grip using Celean’s Break Lion and lands two close strikes, which only intensify Carceret’s fury.
Outmatched, Kvothe attempts to exploit Carceret’s anger but is wrongfooted. Carceret’s Bargeman at the Dock kick knocks him down hard. Judging the peril and remembering Tempi’s warning, Kvothe effectively yields rather than risk serious injury, ending his trial at the first stone.
