Chapter 37: A Piece of Fire
Overview
Kvothe relates “A Piece of Fire,” where a beggar is refused by traders, mercenaries, superstitious townsfolk, and even an Amyr, but welcomed by the Edema Ruh who value stories over coin. The tale underscores Ruh identity and generosity, and raises debate over the Amyr’s nature via Wilem’s interruption.
Summary
Kvothe tells a framed tale at Faeriniel about an old beggar, Sceop, seeking “a piece of fire” among five camps. At the first, wealthy Cealdish traders refuse him charity. Kvothe briefly pauses to tell Wilem not to take offense.
Sceop approaches a second camp of Adem mercenaries. Misreading their silence as hostility and recalling fearsome stories of their prowess, he withdraws. At a third camp, Aturans threaten to hitch him to their cart, forcing him to flee and hide under leaves.
At the fourth camp, Vints mistake Sceop for a barrow draug and argue superstitions to repel him, so he slips away. At the fifth fire, a proud Amyr knight—tattooed as Ciridae—declines to share meager food, weighing Sceop’s hunger against an innocent woman’s life he must save on the morrow. Kvothe and Wilem briefly argue whether the Amyr belong to the church and wager a jot.
Resigned to walk till dawn, Sceop passes a fire concealed among greystones and wagons. The Edema Ruh invite him in: Terris, his wife Silla, and their son Wint offer water, wine, soup, bread, and squash, despite scarce supplies. Called “grandfather,” Sceop weeps at unexpected kindness.
The Ruh ask for payment in the coin they prize most—his story. Sceop recounts his night; moved, the troupe invites him to join their family. Though uncertain, he sees their sincerity and stays for years, telling many stories and making all wiser. Kvothe concludes that, told among the Edema Ruh, this thing is true.
