Chapter 9: A Civil Tongue

Overview

During Admissions, Kvothe demonstrates broad competence while navigating hostile and capricious questioning. Hemme publicly accuses and insults Kvothe, provoking an angry outburst that draws a stern rebuke from the Chancellor.

The Chancellor then turns Hemme’s misconduct into a formal linguistics question, allowing Kvothe to recover and display knowledge, while tensions with Hemme escalate.

Summary

Kvothe appears before the nine masters for Admissions, presenting his tile and standing under the table’s light. Master Arwyl tests medical knowledge; Kvothe answers on mhenka and hazards a cautious, process-aware approach to diagnosis, citing possible Fishery-related poisoning. Master Brandeur asks currency math, which Kvothe handles, then spikes him with an impossible trifoil-compass location question; Kvothe admits ignorance.

Master Elodin first poses a trivial card question, then a profound query about where the moon goes, which Kvothe cannot answer. Elxa Dal examines sympathetic bindings, decay distance, and heat of vaporization; Kvothe replies competently. Mandrag declines to question. Master Lorren asks for the Archives’ rules, forcing Kvothe to recite them, a pointed reminder of his ban. Kilvin probes conductance figures that Kvothe knows from lamp work.

Master Hemme abandons decorum, accusing Kvothe of burning his rooms and slurring him as “ravel.” Stung, Kvothe snaps that he wishes he had set the fire with Hemme inside. The Chancellor intervenes sharply, threatening charges unless Kvothe keeps a civil tongue. Kvothe apologizes and explains the offensive term’s history. The Chancellor censures Hemme’s behavior, then, as Master Linguist, asks the etymology of “ravel.” Kvothe provides a precise derivation and possible related usage before being dismissed to await their decision.
