Chapter 86: The Broken Road
Overview
While the search drags on, Hespe begins the rare tale of Jax and the moon, paralleling the crew’s own weary quest. A brewing fight between Dedan, Hespe, and Kvothe is deftly diffused by Tempi’s feigned naiveté, restoring group cohesion. Hespe postpones finishing the story to the next night.
Summary
The company continues combing the Eld along the southern side of the king’s highway, their days blurring together and marked mainly by nightly campfire stories. Kvothe notes he already knows most tales, until Hespe begins a rare one he has not heard: the story of Jax, a lonely boy on a broken road who falls in love with the moon.
Hespe recounts how a tinker visits Jax, wagers his packs and hat, and tries countless wonders to make the boy happy. Only when Jax sees the moon through spectacles does he name his true desire. The tinker cannot give the moon, loses the wager, and Jax sets off down the road to claim her.
Dedan interrupts with cynical complaints that echo the group’s own fruitless search, provoking rising tension. Hespe and Dedan snipe; Kvothe attempts to steer the argument into reason, but Dedan turns on Kvothe with insults.
Tempi breaks the confrontation by innocently asking what “balls” are, derailing the quarrel into shared laughter. The release of tension resets the group’s mood; Kvothe realizes Tempi engineered the moment, reading his studiously blank expression as deliberate.
With spirits mended, Dedan asks Hespe to continue, but she explains she must restart the tale from the beginning to keep its rhythm. She promises to begin anew the next night if Dedan keeps quiet, and he agrees.
