Chapter 148: The Stories of Stones

Kvothe and Denna ride back to Imre, skirting difficult topics: their Severen quarrel, Denna’s patron, and Felurian. Tension grows despite light conversation. Kvothe leaves Denna at the Boar’s Head and spends a restless night. The next morning, after brief University routines, he dresses carefully and goes to call on Denna.

Denna anticipates Kvothe’s visit and leads him on a picnic outside town. In a sunny dell by a stream and greystone, they flirt and play. Denna tells a “story of stones” about a girl cast off like a stone, hinting at past hurt. A playful water fight follows, easing their earlier strain.

They sun and share lunch on a basalt rock; attraction rises but both tread carefully. Kvothe notices Denna’s fresh bruises and a scar, resolves to broach the subject of her patron, but Denna instead asks about Kvothe’s whip scars. His defense of staying at the University undercuts his planned argument that she should leave her own abuser.

Denna teases Kvothe about his reputation with women, and shifting innuendo unsettles him. When they dress, Kvothe impulsively says, “Love me,” more earnestly than intended. Denna refuses to be “one of the many,” and a heavy silence returns.

Kvothe then produces Denna’s long-lost ring—recovered from Ambrose—and returns it to her. Though grateful and moved to tears, Denna’s gratitude cannot dispel the renewed awkwardness. As clouds gather, they decide to head back to Imre in silence.
