Chapter 140: Just Rewards

Overview

The Maer formally severs ties with Kvothe, offering practical rewards but no patronage or support for the Amyr. Meluan publicly humiliates Kvothe with a wooden ring, collapsing his standing at court. Kvothe protects allies where he can, liquidates valuables, secures passage to Junpui, and slips quietly out of Severen.

Summary

Kvothe receives a sealed packet from Maer Alveron: a dismissal couched in courtesy. The Maer asks for his ring back and requests Kvothe leave Severen, but grants a pardon for the Levinshir killings, a letter of credit for University tuition, and a writ to travel and perform in his lands— pointedly not a patronage.

A second delivery arrives from Meluan Lackless: a scathing letter and a wooden ring bearing her name, a calculated public insult. Kvothe summons Bredon, who explains that in current court custom a wooden ring denies a recipient basic standing—less than a servant. Bredon also notes that the Maer returning his ring "at your earliest convenience" signals swift severance. Word spreads fast; Lord Praevek demands his ring back.

Kvothe tries to shield allies. He urges Bredon to reclaim his ring to avoid damage by association. Bredon, pained, accepts. Kvothe then visits Stapes, returns the Maer’s ring and Stapes’s gold, but Stapes insists Kvothe keep the bone ring as a personal debt beyond courtly games.

Resigned, Kvothe inventories his resources and papers, stows the Maer’s documents, and prepares to depart. He quietly leaves his rooms via the garden rather than submit to an escorted exit. In Severen-Low he sells the stack of slanderous broadsides to a shady bookbinder for cash and royalties, then sells fine clothes and most of Caudicus’s books, and finds a ship sailing to Junpui.

That night, Kvothe searches the city for Denna without success, then drinks at a dockside brothel, leaving his bowl of court rings for the women to divide. Later, overlooking Severen-Low’s lights, he considers discarding Meluan’s wooden ring but pockets it instead, keeping it as a bitter memento.
