Chapter 45: Consortation

Overview

Kvothe is publicly arrested during a performance and tried in Commonwealth and church courts for earlier malfeasance in Imre. Though Ambrose stays hidden behind local nobles, the case disrupts Kvothe’s studies and prospects. Arwyl and Elxa Dal defend him, and he is cleared, but the damage and anxiety linger.

Summary

Kvothe performs at Anker’s on Felling night, enjoying a warm crowd and a rare sense of control over his life. Mid-song, a sumner and three constables arrive and, before the silent room, publicly charge him with Consortation, Malicious Use of Unnatural Arts, Unprovoked Assault, and Malfeasance.

Simmon confronts the sumner, but the man’s gold-banded rod and sealed writ make the arrest unassailable. Kvothe is chained and marched across Stonebridge to Imre in the winter cold, frightening patrons and shattering his local reputation.

The next day, Simmon brings Elxa Dal, and Kvothe learns the charges stem from months-old events when Kvothe called the wind in Imre after Ambrose broke his lute. Though the University had already whipped him, the incident falls under Commonwealth jurisdiction.

Ambrose avoids any direct link, but influential Imre nobles press the case, forcing Kvothe through six tedious days of Commonwealth and church court proceedings: letters read and recorded, arcane citations, and formalities that halt his studies, stall Fishery work, and end hopes for a local patron.

Arwyl and Elxa Dal submit statements defending Kvothe. Ultimately, the courts clear Kvothe of wrongdoing. He feels briefly vindicated, yet recognizes his naiveté: the ordeal has already exacted reputational and practical costs that a simple acquittal cannot undo.
