Chapter 6: Love

Overview

Kvothe performs a clever two-song gambit at the Eolian, thrilling musicians but alienating many gentry, worsening his patronage prospects. At his table they dissect the stunt and Ambrose’s sabotage. Kvothe then leverages the sounten trick to convert free drinks into money, securing three talents. The night ends with quiet reflections as he walks the University and feels a nascent sense of home.

Summary

Stanchion seats Kvothe onstage. Kvothe unveils his beloved lute and begins with Bell-Wether, playing the simple folk tune with exhausting virtuosity until some musicians laugh while much of the audience applauds, then grows confused and resentful at realizing the joke was on their expectations.

He follows with Illien’s fiendishly difficult Tintatatornin, acting bored and casual while executing flawless complexity. Musicians roar with laughter; general applause is scattered. Back at the table, Marie praises the clever inversion, while Stanchion warns Kvothe he has made many gentry feel toyed with. They discuss two audiences—the initiated and the rest—and how this harms Kvothe’s chances for a patron already poisoned by Ambrose’s influence.

Introductions follow. Kvothe concedes the stunt was unwise if he hoped for patronage and prefers pleasing friends over courting the hostile. Manet boldly asks Marie for a drink later and she agrees, surprising everyone.

Kvothe explains that with nobles no longer gifting him, musicians show appreciation by buying rounds. He and his friends accept offers as they play corners. Kvothe worries Stanchion may be right that a patron would solve many problems. After more losses at cards, Lily brings an anonymous round; Manet reveals the sounten trick—ordering water under a fancy name so bought drinks become cash—explaining its brothel origins. Kvothe admits he splits proceeds and applies the ploy for tuition.

The night winds down. Kvothe cashes out a talent and six jots, totaling three talents on him, and receives two bottles of Bredon beer. He and his friends cross Stonebridge back to the University, joking and singing. After dropping Wilem and Simmon at Mews, Kvothe wanders alone past familiar halls, lights a lamp in his small room with a binding despite drink-fog, and reflects that, to his surprise, the University is beginning to feel like home, even as the Ruh in him resists putting down roots.
