Chapter 111: A Liar and a Thief
Overview
Shehyn formally interrogates Kvothe about the Lethani while Tempi and Carceret debate his fate. Kvothe’s enigmatic answers stay Shehyn’s hand, and she rules Tempi may not have erred. She assigns Kvothe to Vashet, “the Hammer,” to prove his worth, publicly acknowledging the risk. Tempi parts, and Kvothe awaits judgment.
Summary
Returning with Shehyn, Kvothe finds Tempi anxious, confirming Shehyn discovered Kvothe’s training herself. Shehyn summons Carceret and excludes Kvothe while hearing the case. After hours, she calls Kvothe in to a stark room where Shehyn questions him, adopting a formal, testing tone.
Shehyn presses Kvothe on killing and the Lethani. Kvothe answers carefully, then slips into Spinning Leaf, offering metaphorical replies about the Lethani’s nature and how to follow it. His answers create a charged silence that shifts the room’s formality.
Carceret urges that Tempi has shamed the Adem and must be cut away, calling Kvothe a liar and thief. Tempi protests and is rebuked. Shehyn balances the sanctity of law against the value of true understanding, concluding it is possible Tempi did not err in teaching Kvothe.
Shehyn decides to give Kvothe to Vashet, “the Hammer,” to test whether he is “iron worth striking.” Carceret approves; Tempi is strained but submits. After a private word with Shehyn, Tempi leads Kvothe to the communal dining hall where quiet conversations and hand-talk surround them.
Kvothe notes the Adem community’s food, customs, and attention to his foreignness, then follows Tempi to a small room prepared with his belongings, minus his sword. Tempi advises him to be civilized and do his best, warns he will not see him again, accepts a parting hug, and leaves. Exhausted, Kvothe falls asleep, awaiting Vashet’s judgment.
