Chapter 69: Such Madness
Overview
Kvothe completes a working gram for the Maer and finally reconnects with Denna, who apologizes for her pattern of abrupt departures. Their bond deepens through days of shared music and conversation. Kvothe also propels the Maer’s courtship of Meluan with letters, songs, and even a poem, enabling Alveron’s reveal and progress.
Summary
Kvothe repeatedly visits Severen-Low to buy materials for a protective gram, funding purchases by selling items from Caudicus’ workshop to appear resourceful to Maer Alveron. He misses Denna, who has disappeared, and feels Bredon’s absence keenly. Despite limited tools, Kvothe forges the Maer’s gram within three days.
After failing to make progress on Meluan’s song—spending a day in a café and a night drinking scutten—Kvothe angers the Maer with his lack of results. On the seventh day, Denna unexpectedly returns. In a garden above the Sheer, Denna quietly admits she sometimes leaves without warning and apologizes, asserting it is sometimes all she can do.
Kvothe chooses not to press or possess Denna, hoping to remain the person she can return to. They spend days together exploring Severen and talking deeply about music. Kvothe admires Denna’s unconventional, rule-free approach, which yields wild, surprising songs.
Meanwhile, Kvothe advances the Maer’s courtship of Meluan through persistent letters and songs, culminating—reluctantly—in a poem. After Alveron reveals himself as the anonymous suitor, he carries the wooing forward with steady charm. Kvothe claims only a small share of credit for the success.
