Chapter 8: Questions
Overview
Shaken by lingering plum bob echoes, Kvothe lies low until admissions. He repairs Anker’s failing iceless for much-needed coin. Seeking instruction in naming, Kvothe corners Elodin, who tests him by breaking into Master Hemme’s rooms and burning Hemme’s robes. Elodin warns Kvothe about arrogance and consequences, implying his teaching is indirect.
Summary
Still rattled by plum bob echoes, Kvothe fails at work and even panics at the Archives’ crawlspace, so he hides in his room for two days, brooding over Ambrose. Feeling steadier on admissions day, he comes downstairs at Anker’s, where Anker presses food and milk on him and laments a failing iceless chest.
Kvothe examines the iceless, finds damaged runes on a tin band, re-etches them, and likely restores the heat siphon. Anker pays generously—both for the fix and as investment—giving Kvothe a welcome boost toward tuition.
Crossing the courtyard, Kvothe spots Master Elodin and presses him about a rumored naming class. Elodin deflects with wordplay, then abruptly assesses Kvothe and, after Hemme barges past insulting them, declares Kvothe too eager, proud, and clever. Challenged to prove worth, Kvothe deftly picks a heavy lock Elodin presents.
Inside opulent rooms, Elodin hands Kvothe armloads of robes, then begins feeding them to the fireplace, finally shutting the flue so smoke floods the hall. Kvothe realizes the rooms belong to Master Hemme. Elodin uses the break‑in to lecture: doors are locked for reasons; Kvothe’s cleverness blinds him to risks; Elodin won’t keep him safe.
Provoked, Kvothe demands real teaching. Elodin replies that he is teaching and that Kvothe refuses to learn. As smoke billows, Elodin warns Kvothe to leave before blame falls on him and to wash before admissions, while Elodin calmly retreats to his own nearby rooms.
