Chapter 91: Flame, Thunder, Broken Tree

Overview

Discovering the bandits’ larger force, Kvothe abandons a quick strike and uses a corpse-link to maim archers, sowing panic. A terrifying chain-mailed leader shrugs off Marten’s arrow and directs counterfire. Near collapse from binder’s chills, Kvothe binds a lightning strike to the oak through an arrow, ending the scene in a blackout.

Summary

Kvothe, Marten, and Tempi scout a large, well-organized bandit encampment nestled beneath a massive oak and ringed by posts. Estimating their numbers at least two-to-one against them, they plan to sting and withdraw. Marten goes to turn Dedan and Hespe back but loses them in the dark.

A shout from the east reveals Dedan and Hespe have stumbled into the sentries, triggering a rapid fortification: planks braced to posts form low walls, bows come ready, and chaos builds. Lacking fire or a clean link, Kvothe enters the Heart of Stone and uses the dead sentry’s body as a potent sympathetic link, stabbing and slashing to inflict mirrored wounds that cripple and panic several bowmen.

A chain-mailed leader emerges, restores order with crisp commands, and when Marten shoots him, he snaps the arrow and points directly at their position. Arrows pour toward the ridge. Kvothe severs multiple bowstrings at once by linking to a bow with his own blood, but the effort brings brutal binder’s chills and hypothermia.

As the leader regroups his men, Kvothe forces Marten to shoot the great oak. In desperation, Kvothe plants an arrow in the ground, splits his mind, and binds sky to earth: “As above, so below.” Lightning answers—blinding and concussive—then Kvothe falls into darkness.

Who Appears

  • Kvothe
Narrator; leads the assault, uses corpse-link sympathy to wound bandits, severs bowstrings with blood, then summons lightning, collapsing.
  • Marten
Tracker; estimates enemy numbers, loses Dedan and Hespe, prays in fear, wounds the leader, shoots the oak on Kvothe’s command.
  • Tempi
Adem; advocates a patient, Lethani-aligned hunt; brings Kvothe a bow; cannot close under arrow fire.
  • Bandit Leader
Chain-mailed commander; restores order, shrugs off an arrow, identifies Kvothe’s position, coordinates counterfire.
  • Dedan
Mercenary; stumbles into sentries with Hespe, triggering the alarm and initial arrow volleys.
  • Hespe
Mercenary; alongside Dedan, inadvertently alerts the camp, drawing concentrated enemy attention.
