Chapter 87: The Lethani
Overview
In Crosson, Tempi is provoked by mercenaries and swiftly defeats three opponents, reshaping local perceptions of the Adem. On the return, he begins instructing Kvothe in the Lethani, rejecting myths of secret power and framing it as inner discernment of right action, correcting Kvothe’s fearful resort to a knife.
Summary
Kvothe and Tempi walk to Crosson for supplies, practicing Ademic and gestures. A rustle in the woods raises fear of bandits, but only deer appear. In town they order provisions and enter the Laughing Moon, unusually crowded with frustrated mercenaries seeking scarce caravan work.
A broad-shouldered mercenary, Tam, publicly needles Tempi about pay and prowess, escalating with insults. Misunderstandings of language and pride sharpen tensions until Tam gathers allies to fight. Tempi invites more opponents, then the brawl begins with Tam’s attempted headbutt.
In a blur, Tam breaks himself on Tempi’s prepared posture; Tempi drops Tam, disables a tall blonde woman, and neatly floors a bald wrestler, ending the fight almost instantly. A bystander salutes Tempi. Returning to the table, Tempi tests Kvothe’s awareness, notices Kvothe’s hidden knife, and shows clear disapproval.
On the road back, Tempi declares he must teach Kvothe about the Lethani. He dispels myths of secret word-fire or iron skin, demonstrating practical technique (countering a headbutt) and stressing training over magic. He defines the Lethani as inner right action—neither law nor mere politeness—likening it to finding the true pass through mountains.
They explore when fighting fits the Lethani, why fear cannot root it, and why drawing a knife first would forfeit any true victory. Using a tinker as example, Tempi says one must first know, then do, the right thing. Kvothe admits he does not understand; Tempi approves, calling that honesty part of the Lethani.
