Chapter 94: Over Rock and Root

Overview

The company follows the bandits’ map west, suffering a miserable slog through an uncharted swamp. Tempi formally begins Kvothe’s Ketan training as Kvothe teaches Tempi lute. Dedan and Hespe grow closer. Hoping for a town, they instead reach a moonlit pool and encounter Felurian, a revelation that upends expectations and raises new dangers.

Summary

Kvothe’s group chooses to trust the recovered map and head straight west toward Crosson, despite Hespe’s injured leg slowing them. On the march, Tempi begins true instruction in the Ketan, revealing how little Kvothe actually knows. In return, Kvothe starts teaching Tempi lute basics—notes and simple chords.

The next day they are forced into a fetid, unmarked swamp, turning progress into a grueling crawl. Tempers fray briefly when Dedan falls into the muck, but the company focuses on finding dry ground. As evening falls, the weather shifts from muggy to chill, and they push on to escape the stench and biting insects.

By moonlight, morale improves. Dedan supports Hespe, and their banter softens into gentle closeness that even Marten approves. The group finds a stream, washes off the mud, and changes clothes, buoyed by the distant sound of singing that suggests civilization—and rest—may be near.

They follow the stream into a bright, moonlit clearing where the water pools. The singing has ceased, and there is no road or inn—only a still pool and a figure on a rock. Awe and disbelief ripple through the group as Marten invokes Tehlu. Kvothe recognizes the impossible truth: it is Felurian.
