Chapter 78: Another Road, Another Forest
Overview
Kvothe’s band reaches the ambush-plagued stretch of the Eld and establishes a cautious, methodical plan to locate the bandits. Tensions flare when Tempi rebukes and outmatches Dedan, revealing Adem skill and prompting adjustments to Tempi’s conspicuous clothing. The group finalizes cover stories and contingencies, underscoring the mission’s risk and Kvothe’s leadership.
Summary
At dawn, Kvothe drives a hungover Dedan onto the road and observes Dedan’s clumsy infatuation with Hespe, which Dedan fails to notice despite Hespe’s subtle reciprocation. Tempi remains mostly silent, performing ritual stretches and obsessively washing, and speaks only in measured, deliberate phrases that hint at language difficulty.
The group reaches the isolated Eld road segment where attacks occurred. After Marten scouts and finds no one nearby, Kvothe outlines a search plan: Marten sweeps a narrow strip a mile off the road while pairs follow to find worn trails leading to the bandits’ camp. They will advance a couple miles per day, move camp every fifth day, resupply from Crosson, and use low-smoke rennel wood to avoid detection. Each member rehearses a cover story if intercepted; Kvothe will locate captured allies using his arcane skills.
Concern arises over Tempi’s bright red Adem clothing and limited Aturan. When Dedan mocks him, Tempi sharply rebukes Dedan’s constant chatter and provokes a scuffle. Tempi deftly evades and open-hand strikes Dedan, demonstrating superior technique without injuring him, defusing the hostility into rough camaraderie and confirming Adem prowess.
Privately, Kvothe clarifies the mission with Tempi, who acknowledges he understands most of their fast talk. Tempi produces gray clothing suitable for hunting and agrees to fight or feign cooperation depending on numbers, and to trigger a third-night distraction if captured, matching the group plan.
Over a quiet dinner, they anticipate the grim work ahead. When pressed about his own capture, Kvothe jokes he could kill the bandits alone, which unsettles the Vintish crew. Conversation falters; they assign watches and put out the fire, ending the day on a tense, prepared note.
