Chapter 82: Barbarians

Overview

The party moves camp, and Kvothe secretly crafts protective mommets. A breakthrough occurs as Tempi reveals Adem hand-speech and its cultural logic, reframing expression, civility, and emotion. Kvothe, stung by Tempi’s “barbarian” judgment, commits to learning and begins mimicking the Ketan, signaling a deepening tie to Adem ways.

Summary

Kvothe and Tempi relocate the camp while Dedan and Hespe head to Crosson for supplies and Marten scouts and hunts. After settling, Kvothe discreetly melts tallow to make two crude mommets, feeling better prepared.

Tempi returns from bathing, unnervingly unselfconscious, and complains about a tick. Kvothe notices Tempi’s many shallow scars. A repeated hand motion makes Kvothe realize Adem communication relies on nuanced hand-speak. Tempi confirms, explaining left-hand primacy for subtle meaning and why facial expressions are deemphasized.

Across hours, Tempi teaches core gestures; Kvothe struggles but becomes fascinated by the “second tongue.” Tempi argues hand-speech is civilization, while facial smiling is for family; laughter and tears, he says, live in the belly and should not be suppressed. He labels Vintans “barbarians,” not out of malice but cultural framing, which spurs Kvothe to learn more.

Tempi practices the slow martial dance, the Ketan. Stung by the claim that barbarians cannot learn, Kvothe imitates the forms, finding them gruelingly precise. Later, while Kvothe cooks, Tempi calmly peels potatoes with his cherished sword, asserting it is sharp and clean. As evening falls, Tempi stretches and runs the Ketan again; Kvothe follows despite exhaustion, drawn to the challenge.
