Chapter 125: Caesura

Overview

Vashet, tasked by Shehyn, selects a culturally significant sword for Kvothe: Saicere, which Kvothe internally names Caesura. He learns its care and the gravity of stewardship. Magwyn begins teaching its Atas, revealing 236 past bearers and great age, binding Kvothe to memorize the lineage before leaving.

Summary

Kvothe is summoned by Vashet and Shehyn to a locked, candlelit armory where the school’s swords hang. Shehyn orders Vashet to choose, making the decision her responsibility. After testing several blades, Vashet reluctantly selects a burnished grey sword with a slightly enlarged guard that fits Kvothe perfectly.

Shehyn affirms the choice and Vashet names the sword Saicere. Kvothe hears both Saicere and, in his own sense of naming, Caesura. They depart in silence, and Vashet spends the day drilling Kvothe in meticulous care, assembly, strapping, and how the guard changes certain grips. The sword belongs to the school, not Kvothe, and he must return it when he can no longer fight.

When Kvothe asks what to do if the blade itself breaks, Vashet reacts with horror, revealing the sword’s deep cultural weight. After lunch, Vashet takes Kvothe to Magwyn, who will teach him the Atas—the sword’s complete history. Vashet pointedly instructs Kvothe to be polite and attentive.

Magwyn begins reading the lineage of Saicere’s owners, having Kvothe repeat each entry. The roll of names and deaths grows grim and tedious, with owners dying in wars, duels, or nameless slayings. Magwyn corrects Kvothe’s pronunciation and explains Saicere means to break, to catch, and to fly, while Kvothe privately insists the true name is Caesura.

Magwyn counts 236 prior bearers; Kvothe will be the 237th. Realizing the implied antiquity, Kvothe notes the sword is likely over two millennia old. Magwyn informs him he must remain until he has memorized the entire Atas; meals and a nearby bed will be provided. The lesson resumes: “First came Chael…”
