Chapter 89: Losing the Light
Overview
Endless rain fractures the company’s cohesion: Marten falls ill, Dedan grows insubordinate, and tempers flare until Kvothe asserts control. Tempi reports killing two ambushers nearby, confirming the bandits’ presence.
With light fading, Kvothe takes Tempi and Marten to track the bodies, leaving Dedan and Hespe to guard camp, escalating internal tensions while advancing the hunt.
Summary
Relentless rain erodes morale and routine in camp. Marten grows sick and withdrawn, stories cease, food spoils, and Dedan becomes surly and unreliable, returning drunk from town. When Kvothe finds the fire out, he explodes, provoking Dedan until Kvothe’s threat—backed by a hidden mommet—halts an imminent fight.
Tempi returns and quietly reveals he killed two men who ambushed him less than a mile away within the last hour. The group clarifies details: the attackers bore broad double-edged swords and leather armor with some metal. Marten, despite his worsening cough, confirms there is barely enough daylight to track.
Pressed for time, Kvothe decides Tempi will lead him and Marten to the bodies to find the bandits’ trail before dark. He orders Dedan and Hespe to stay and guard camp to preserve stealth and avoid blundering into superior numbers. Dedan bristles at Kvothe’s authority, but Kvothe ends the dispute and departs with Tempi as the steady rain intensifies.
