Chapter 64: Flight
Overview
Kvothe, under suspicion and guarded, slips out, reunites with Denna, and learns she now serves the secretive patron he distrusts. Returning, he confronts the Maer, but Stapes’ hidden pile of dead songbirds exposes the poisoning’s effects and clears Kvothe. The Maer orders Caudicus seized, yet the arcanist escapes, prompting secrecy. Alveron privately pledges future aid, and Stapes marks his gratitude with rings.
Summary
Kvothe, sidelined at court and watched by a palace guard, grows frustrated and sneaks off the Maer’s estate. In Severen he finds Denna, now tanned and fashionably dressed, watching a street play. They spend the afternoon together; Denna reveals she has secured formal patronage from the same secretive man Kvothe calls “Master Ash.” Kvothe warns her about the danger and past abuse she once confided, but Denna denies it and deflects. They agree to meet again to ride, though Denna still nurses a painful rib injury from a claimed fall.
Returning, Kvothe learns he is to be confined and strides to confront the Maer. Alveron’s cold authority shocks Kvothe into realizing how precarious his position truly is. Stapes then enters, inadvertently revealing a dead sipquick in his hands; under questioning he admits he has been replacing many dying birds to spare the Maer worry. The deaths corroborate Kvothe’s poisoning theory. Anger dissolves into relief, and Kvothe, the Maer, and Stapes reconcile.
Alveron summons Commander Dagon to arrest Caudicus, heeding Kvothe’s cautions about arcanists and ordering iron chains, gag, blindfold—and even the removal of thumbs. Soon a guard reports a malignant presence in Caudicus’s tower, one man dead, and Caudicus gone. Kvothe tastes the latest vial, finds it sweet, and infers Caudicus realized the Maer had stopped taking the poisoned draught and fled ahead of pursuit.
Resolved to keep the matter secret to protect his courtship, the Maer thanks Kvothe privately, offering future aid in lieu of public reward or title. As Kvothe departs, Stapes embraces him in gratitude and presses into his palm a fine silver ring and a smooth white ring bearing Stapes’ name, tokens of enduring favor. Kvothe returns to his rooms elated by hard-won trust and new promises.
