Chapter 79: Signs
Overview
Marten trains Kvothe and Tempi to read subtle trail signs, cover their tracks, and signal discreetly, using a sympathy-linked twig in lieu of calls. He plants false signs to keep them alert and proposes a wager to sharpen focus. The day ends with shared campfire storytelling, steadying group morale.
Summary
After breakfast, Marten begins instructing Kvothe and Tempi in practical tracking, emphasizing subtle indicators—wilting leaves, disturbed moss, scuffed stone, and bent branches—over obvious clues. Concerned about silent communication, Kvothe reveals a two-note bird-call whistle, but Marten warns it will draw suspicion by day.
To solve signaling, Kvothe binds two halves of a twig with sympathy, startling Marten before explaining it as a harmless “invisible string.” They agree Kvothe will gently twitch the paired stick to summon Marten without noise. Marten resumes teaching, proving a patient, effective instructor despite the painstaking pace.
Midday, Marten reverses their route and humiliatingly catalogs every trace Kvothe and Tempi left behind, underscoring how easily they betray themselves. He then teaches them to conceal tracks, warning that poor cover can be more conspicuous than leaving signs untouched, and shows how to detect concealed mistakes made by others.
As they finally sweep the forest, Kvothe’s boredom yields to excitement when he and Tempi find multiple signs; Marten reveals he planted them to prevent inattention. To maintain vigilance, Marten proposes a standing wager: Kvothe and Tempi earn a ha’penny per found sign; Marten wins a silver bit for each they miss.
The bet sharpens their focus through the afternoon. By day’s end, Kvothe and Tempi are slightly ahead, having missed only a few subtle indicators like a broken spiderweb. That night, Marten tells a familiar tale of a widow’s son, a giant, and a rescued princess, which engages the group and stirs Kvothe’s memories of home.
