Chapter 133: Dreams
Overview
Kvothe hides the impostors’ wagons, gathers supplies, and leads Krin and a traumatized Ellie on foot. He tends camp and gently coaxes Ellie to eat and respond, while recalling Vashet’s teaching on the Lethani. As night falls, Kvothe keeps watch, burdened by guilt over the killings and beset by worse dreams.
Summary
Kvothe spends an hour concealing the impostor troupe’s wagons in the forest, stripping Edema markings and packing food and valuables onto two horses. Finding only one saddle, he prepares to walk with Krin and an unresponsive Ellie rather than ride.
On the road, Kvothe slips into a waking doze and recalls Vashet’s lesson on the Lethani, equating success with right action. Krin rouses him as dusk approaches, and they make camp. Kvothe tends the horses, sets a tent for the girls, and notes Ellie’s vacant, shock-stunned state.
During dinner, Kvothe keeps up a gentle, steady conversation to reach Ellie. By joking and addressing her directly, he elicits small responses: a faint frown at his horse-apple joke, nods for more soup and water, and finally self-feeding. Krin assists and watches Ellie’s slight improvement with hope.
When Ellie grows sleepy, Kvothe suggests Krin help her to bed, and Ellie complies. Kvothe offers to sleep outside the tent to protect them and ease Krin’s unease. Wrapped in his shaed before the flap, he keeps watch.
Alone, Kvothe thinks of the slavers he killed—Otto, Alleg, and Kete—dwelling on the closeness and warmth of their blood and Kete’s pleas. The weight of his actions contrasts with Vashet’s teaching about right action. When he finally sleeps, his dreams are worse.
