Chapter 110: Beauty and Branch

Overview

Kvothe reaches Haert and unknowingly meets Shehyn, who probes his views on beauty before testing his Ketan. She easily outclasses him, then reveals the sword tree (Latantha) to teach the principle of root, leaf, and branch—where to spend strength. The lesson reframes his training while Tempi’s judgment remains pending.

Summary

Kvothe and Tempi complete a fifteen-day, three-hundred-mile trek into the Stormwal foothills and reach Haert, an Adem settlement built low and hidden against the wind. Tempi goes inside to make introductions to Shehyn, leaving Kvothe to wait outdoors.

An older Adem woman engages Kvothe about beauty and utility, then leads him to a sheltered valley. Through measured questions on wall, water, and a lopsided yellow hat, Kvothe argues beauty in function. The woman later reveals the sword tree, the Latantha, and presses Kvothe to name its beauty. She says it simply is.

She asks about the Ketan; Kvothe answers cautiously and deduces she is Shehyn. On why she wears white, Shehyn answers that if she bleeds, an enemy should see it. Concerned for Tempi’s standing, Kvothe faces Shehyn’s test. They spar: Kvothe cannot touch her as she moves with perfect economy, then he unexpectedly weeps at her beauty in motion and briefly catches her before she effortlessly throws him.

At the Latantha, Shehyn gives Kvothe a razor-edged leaf, demonstrating the peril of striking root or leaf and teaching the true target: the branch. She applies this to Kvothe’s stances, showing where strength is spent well. Kvothe identifies Shehyn’s “branches” and executes Thunder Upward effectively; Shehyn recovers balance with a single step.

Shehyn concludes Tempi both taught and withheld crucial principles. She turns away, gesturing Kvothe to follow, leaving Tempi’s fate unresolved while signaling that Kvothe’s real instruction in the Lethani has begun.
