Chapter 101: Close Enough to Touch
Overview
Kvothe presses Felurian about her magic, learning the distinction between grammarie and glamourie and how orientation works in the Fae. He reflects on his unusually patchy memory there—clear on Felurian and lessons, void on mundane details like light and food. The strangeness underscores the Fae’s alien rules and his deepening entanglement.
Summary
After gathering shadow with Felurian, Kvothe asks more directly about her magic. Felurian answers with disarming simplicity or with opaque Fae terminology, leaving Kvothe both informed and frustrated. He learns that what she does with shadow is grammarie—making things be—distinct from glamourie, which makes things seem.
Felurian explains that conventional directions are meaningless in the Fae. Instead, the sky offers a brighter and darker horizon; walking toward brightness leads to day, darkness to night, and a full circuit returns one to the start. She names these axes Day/Night and, variously, Dark/Light, Summer/Winter, or Forward/Backward.
Kvothe turns inward to consider his memory. He prides himself on recall trained by his childhood troupe and Abenthy, yet in the Fae it is patchy. Conversations with Felurian and her lessons remain vivid, as does her presence and their intimacy, but many ordinary details refuse to come to mind.
He remembers seeing Felurian in twilight, candlelight, and lamplight, yet cannot recall any lamp, wick, or scent of oil or wax. He vividly recalls meals—fruit, bread, honey, blackberries, rare meat—and their washing in the pool afterward, but cannot remember how food arrived. The idea of servants seems absurd, yet Felurian baking is equally unthinkable.
As he tries to resolve this paradox, Kvothe concedes he can imagine wild game entering Felurian’s glade or her taking it herself. The chapter closes with him picturing a deer venturing close enough to touch, underscoring how the Fae bends reality and memory around Felurian’s effortless dominion.
