Chapter 128: Names
Overview
Kvothe debates tools, respect, and belief with Vashet, then learns the gravity of deep names and the meaning of his own. He declines Shehyn’s offer to remain in Haert, honoring his duty to the Maer. In a formal rite, Shehyn recounts an ancient tale naming the seven Rhinta and their signs, binding Kvothe to silence and patience.
Summary
At sunrise, Kvothe and Vashet discuss Saicere and what constitutes proper use. Vashet argues that respectful use means good use, not reserving a sword only for killing. Their talk shifts to Adem beliefs about parentage; Vashet refuses debate, urging Kvothe to keep his “barbarian” views quiet to avoid scorn.
Kvothe asks about the deep name Magwyn gave him. Vashet warns that true names grant power and must be kept secret, distinguishing them from everyday names. She explains Tempi’s name and finally, at Kvothe’s insistence, reveals his deep name’s meanings: flame, thunder, and broken tree, but refuses to interpret its implications.
They visit Shehyn, where Kvothe declines the offer to remain and train, citing duty to return to Severen and report to the Maer. Shehyn approves but warns him not to take the red, to avoid teaching the Ketan, and to ensure Saicere’s return if he dies. She notes that whether Kvothe wins or loses fights, Ademre’s reputation benefits.
Shehyn then introduces a ritual story about the Rhinta, binding Kvothe to speak of it only after a thousand nights and to ask questions only after traveling a thousand miles. She recounts a fallen empire of seven cities and one, the betrayal of six, and the remembrance of seven names. Shehyn lists the seven Rhinta and their signs: Cyphus (blue flame), Stercus (in thrall of iron), Ferule (chill, dark of eye), Usnea (decay), Grey Dalcenti (never speaks), Pale Alenta (brings blight), and Alaxel (lord of seven, bearing the shadow’s hame).
