Chapter 74: Rumors

Overview

After arguing with Denna, Kvothe broods over scandal sheets until the Maer arrives with a crisis: tax collectors are vanishing on the northern king’s road. Suspecting leaks and possible "magic," Alveron secretly recruits Kvothe to lead four mercenaries into the Eld to eliminate the bandits.

Kvothe prepares at night, retrieves his lute by breaking into the luthier’s, and departs. On the road he realizes the Maer may be sidelining him, but he resolves to succeed and earn deeper favor.

Summary

Reeling from his fight with Denna, Kvothe spends the day drinking and distracting himself by reading scandalous rumors about the Vintic nobility. The gossip illuminates motives and histories—including Meluan Lackless’s hatred of the Ruh—while underscoring Kvothe’s isolation and sour mood. Bredon is absent, leaving Kvothe without counsel.

The Maer Alveron arrives via his secret passage and reveals a serious problem: multiple tax collectors have vanished on the northern king’s road, with over half the northern taxes lost. Patrols have found nothing, and Alveron fears leaks within his guard and hints at possible magic. He has quietly assembled a small, woodwise team—tracker, two mercenaries, and an expensive Adem—and asks Kvothe to lead them, valuing his discretion and arcane skill.

Kvothe agrees and helps review maps of the Eld, recognizing the mission will require stealth and resolve. Stapes outfits him quickly, and because a writ would expose the operation, Alveron funds Kvothe with a purse of silver. Kvothe departs through the estate’s hidden passages into Severen-Low before dawn, weary and hungover, and immediately realizes he lacks essentials.

Remembering his lute left at a luthier’s, Kvothe detours, breaks in, and reclaims it, narrowly avoiding mishap. He then meets the four mercenaries at a tavern north of Severen and sets out along the king’s road toward the Eld.

As they travel, Kvothe reevaluates Alveron’s motives, concluding the Maer may be sidelining him now that Meluan’s courtship is secured. Even so, he resolves to outmaneuver expectations: he will track down the bandits and succeed, ensuring “third time pays for all” and binding the Maer to him in debt.
