Chapter 106: Returning

Overview

Kvothe reels from the Cthaeh’s revelations, suffering nightmares while Felurian awkwardly tries to comfort him with small wonders and gifts. As Kvothe recovers, Felurian completes the shaed and binds it to evoke her memory. Motivated to act, Kvothe chooses to leave; Felurian guides him through greystones back to the mortal world after he promises to return.

Summary

After meeting the Cthaeh, Kvothe falls into fractured sleep and grief, haunted by vivid and forgotten nightmares of his parents and troupe. Felurian watches over him, offering no probing questions, instead bringing quiet comforts and strange marvels. Despite her power, Felurian seems unsure how to soothe him, her attempts gentle but tentative.

Felurian returns with a giant green fruit whose nested seeds they share, summons two small birds that sing in harmony, and offers a warm, clear drink like sunlight. She gives Kvothe a warm red stone that hatches a tiny creature, and once he hears her quietly sobbing by the water. When Kvothe wakes weeping, Felurian lays a cautious hand over his, revealing her inexperience with comfort.

Time mends Kvothe: his dreams fade, appetite returns, and he banters, then flirts. Curiosity restored, he asks after the shaed; Felurian reveals it finished and shows that he can draw it from shadow. She drapes it over him, then embraces him within it, explicitly binding the garment to her touch so he will remember her whenever it wraps him.

The Cthaeh’s words keep urging Kvothe back to the world—about his parents’ killer and Denna—so he resolves to leave. He dresses for the first time in ages. Felurian, saddened but accepting, leads him to greystones and guides him across to the mortal world. Kvothe promises to return, kisses farewell, then departs without turning back again until she has vanished.
