Chapter 112: The Hammer

Overview

Vashet assumes Kvothe’s training and immediately attempts to drive him from Haert with humiliation and pain, declaring him unwelcome and a thief of Adem secrets. Isolated at lunch, Kvothe endures Carceret’s taunts but answers with a cutting insult. He returns to Vashet, reveals his whip scars, and declares he cannot be frightened away, staking his resolve to learn and to honor Tempi.

Summary

Kvothe waits in a small, windswept park when Vashet arrives carrying her sword slung like a lute. Speaking fluent Aturan, she establishes control, belittling Tempi’s teaching and making clear Kvothe’s low status and unwelcome presence. She orders him to fetch a stick for their first lesson.

When Kvothe returns with a willow switch, Vashet strips it and circles him, then strikes his arms and back, inflicting sharp welts. She delivers her lesson: Kvothe is a barbarian and a thief of Adem secrets who must learn only to leave Haert and never return. Any protest is cut off; she demands he acknowledge understanding and departs, implying consequences for Tempi’s reputation if Kvothe fails.

At lunch, isolated and aching, Kvothe is confronted by Carceret, who quietly mocks his cry of pain and wagers on his quick departure. Kvothe responds in a soft, public-cutting insult that forces Carceret to swallow her anger, a small but hollow victory amid his ostracism.

Meeting Vashet again, Kvothe produces a heavy wooden practice sword instead of a switch and bares the scars of multiple University whippings. He explains pain will not deter him; he stayed under harsher punishment to pursue knowledge. He declares he will not abandon Tempi or his desire to learn. Handing Vashet the heavy sword, Kvothe closes his eyes, inviting worse than welts if she truly means to drive him away.
