Chapter 47: Interlude—The Hempen Verse
Overview
In this interlude, village gossip distorts Kvothe’s trial into the “hempen verse” myth while Kote and Bast fabricate a grand legend about The Chronicler. After the farmers depart, Kvothe reveals the tale was a deliberate lesson for Chronicler about the cost of prying, then returns to continue his story.
Summary
In the Waystone Inn, Chronicler returns to the bar pleased with an hour’s work as Kote serves warm apple pie to the gathered men. Old Cob resumes a sensationalized version of Kvothe’s Imre trial, claiming Kvothe escaped hanging by invoking a secret “hempen verse” in old Tema and using a honey-and-sea-plant potion to sweeten his voice.
As Cob spins the tale, Kote and Bast play along. Kote then shifts to another story, inventing a mythic figure called The Chronicler: a Faerie-blooded lord of stories with a paper sword named Sheave, bound by peculiar geases, and questing to win a king’s daughter. The farmers accept this legend eagerly and leave to spread it.
Once they’re gone, Chronicler protests. Kvothe coolly explains he seeded the legend deliberately: to give Chronicler perspective about rummaging in others’ lives and to push back against Chronicler’s earlier manipulation. Kvothe apologizes for any trouble, admits he overreacted, and calls them back to the main tale, noting the trial was tedious but had important repercussions.
