Chapter 29: Stolen

Overview

Kvothe sustains his cover by sleeping in friends’ rooms while injuries heal, but returns to find his cherished lute missing from his garret. A fruitless search and an oiled window latch suggest theft. The loss devastates Kvothe, stripping him of his livelihood and identity amid mounting pressure from Ambrose’s malfeasance.

Summary

Kvothe maintains a careful routine to avoid drawing suspicion after the break-in at Ambrose’s rooms. Each night he locks his garret at Anker’s, climbs out the window, and sleeps in Wil or Sim’s room, whichever friend is on first watch, to keep up a semblance of normality while he heals.

Late one night, Kvothe returns to Anker’s exhausted and goes through the motions: brief small talk, food, and heading upstairs. Moments later he rushes back down in a panic, asking the new serving girl if he left his lute in the taproom after performing. She checks the bar, pantry, and kitchen, but finds nothing.

Kvothe searches his tiny room repeatedly, checking every possible space. Realizing the lute is gone, he notices the window latch he keeps oiled for quiet exits—implying someone entered that way. The loss strikes him like a physical blow; he sits on the bed feeling hollow and breathless, as if his heart has been stolen with the lute.
