Chapter 147: Debts

Overview

Kvothe returns to Tarbean to repay old kindnesses and aid Trapis, confronting his past with generosity and restraint. He then sets a subtle trap for Ambrose with a forged letter. In a Tarbean inn, Kvothe dramatically restores Denna’s breath using Naming; their banter rekindles intimacy, and they decide to travel together.

Summary

With free time mid-term, Kvothe hires a fetter-cart and travels to Tarbean to revisit his past. He pays small debts to people who once helped or suffered from him, then descends to Trapis’s cellar refuge. Recognized as the boy he once was, Kvothe gives Trapis five talents, brings supplies, tends the sick children, and gifts Trapis stockings and shoes before leaving so his presence won’t drive frightened street children away.

Kvothe then crafts a forged letter to Ambrose, implying a noblewoman’s pregnancy and threatening to tell the baron. He ages the letter with water droplets, obscures the initial, soils it for authenticity, disguises his hair with a beggar’s hat, and—posing with a Vintish accent—sells carriage of the letter to a teamster bound past Imre. He returns the hat and generously pays the beggar.

That evening, Kvothe listens in a busy Tarbean inn as his legend grows—now called “Kvothe the Arcane,” credited with impossible magics and artifacts. As a tale crescendos, a young woman staggers in unable to breathe. Kvothe seizes command, has her escort removed, and gently Names to restore her breath. The woman is Denna; she counts his “seven words” and teases him as the taproom whispers of magic.

In the privacy their notoriety affords, they talk. Kvothe compliments a hidden Yllish-knot braid that spells “lovely,” embarrassing Denna into untying it. They spar wittily about gifts, suitors’ gold, and the chains wealth can make. Kvothe says gold is not for her—she is too bright for burnishing—and Denna admits she has missed him, asking to accompany him back toward Imre.
