Chapter 12: The Sleeping Mind
Overview
Kilvin investigates a rumor that Kvothe sold false charms, but, unconvinced of wrongdoing, lets the matter rest. Elodin’s long-awaited class begins with a lesson on the sleeping mind’s power to grasp true names, illustrated by a simple stone toss.
Students select a small name to pursue and receive a Stacks-scavenger reading assignment, setting their unconventional course of study.
Summary
Kvothe rises eager for Elodin’s long-sought naming class but first works in the Fishery to chip at Devi’s debt. Master Kilvin summons him privately about a distressed girl seeking a “young red-haired wizard” who sold her a charm. Kvothe denies selling fraudulent trinkets, arguing he wouldn’t risk Fraudulent Purveyance.
Kilvin, stern but fair, accepts Kvothe’s explanation, noting only that he must investigate such things. The matter is set aside, and Kvothe returns to work before heading early to Elodin’s noon lecture, where six other students slowly gather.
Elodin arrives late, sets strict expectations, then teaches that waking minds are limited while the sleeping mind can grasp true names. He dramatizes this with a stone-throwing exercise: seven arcanists cannot calculate its path, but a child catches it instantly, proving the sleeping mind’s power.
Elodin identifies latent affinities—Inyssa for iron, Fela for stone, and Kvothe for wind—then instructs each student to choose a small name to seek. He assigns a hunt through the Stacks for twenty obscure books, refusing to recommend one and insisting they earn their learning, before abruptly ending the class.
