Chapter 73: Blood and Ink
Overview
Denna unveils her new song portraying Lanre as a tragic hero, directly clashing with Kvothe’s knowledge of Lanre and the Chandrian. Their dispute explodes into a deeply personal fight, exposing control, pride, and trust issues. Kvothe later attempts to confess his greatest secret to mend things but cannot bring himself to write it.
Summary
Kvothe frames the chapter with Teccam’s philosophy on secrets, contrasting those that press to be told with those that crush the heart. The next day, Denna summons Kvothe to the Four Tapers and leads him outside Severen to a quiet greystone. Dressed strikingly and barefoot, she prepares to debut her first original song.
On the walk, Kvothe suggests the Maer as Denna’s patron. Denna refuses and extracts a solemn oath that Kvothe will not seek information about her secret patron, Master Ash. Their talk turns light again until they settle by the greystone, where Denna begins her song.
Denna performs an early version of The Song of Seven Sorrows, casting Lanre as a tragic, wronged hero and Selitos as a cruel tyrant. Kvothe, stunned and hollowed by the inversion of the story he knows, responds poorly, first nitpicking a name, then insisting her portrayal is false. Denna, buoyed and anxious for his opinion, bristles at his correction.
The disagreement escalates when Kvothe claims truth matters more than story and warns that Lanre became one of the Chandrian. Denna mocks the notion, calling it childish. Wounded pride and old trauma drive Kvothe into cruel barbs; Denna matches him, accusing him of trying to fix and control her. Their argument spirals into personal attacks, and they part separately, furious.
Hours later, Kvothe’s anger cools into regret. He resolves to write Denna a letter revealing his secret—the murder of his family and the reality of the Chandrian—but the “secret of the heart” proves too heavy. Despite wine and effort, the page stays blank until he bloodies his hand against the desk, realizing how easily blood can flow where ink will not.
