Chapter 42: Penance

Overview

During his suspension, Kvothe confronts Devi in a snowstorm to repair their fractured relationship. He reveals Ambrose’s plum-bob poisoning and Devi’s unwitting role, and they reset the loan to original terms. With some coin retained, Kvothe secures winter gear, gifts for Auri, and modest protections for his room.

Summary

Suspended from the Archives and with snow making travel difficult, Kvothe spends several days working extra shifts in the Medica and Fishery, playing at Anker’s, and catching up on sleep. Failing to find Auri due to ice and locked grates, he finally resolves to face Devi.

He arrives in Imre soaked by sleet and is admitted by Devi, who pointedly enjoys his discomfort. Kvothe offers a penance coin and asks to renegotiate his debt’s sudden call. He then reveals Ambrose had him dosed with the plum bob—and that Devi supplied it, unknowingly.

Devi drops her pretense of outrage, admits she didn’t know it was for Ambrose or Kvothe, and confesses she made the dose in exchange for rare books. Kvothe proposes mutual fault and equilibrium; they shake on restoring the original loan terms. By the fire they discuss lingering aftereffects of the poison and Devi’s limited lab setup, tension easing into shared humor.

Before leaving, Kvothe offers to pay term interest early; Devi declines, honoring the original deal. With coin still in hand, Kvothe reflects on the security of having “seed grain,” then buys warm clothing and supplies for himself and gifts for Auri, and installs a drop-bar on his garret window to protect his few possessions.
